Trying to have sex for the first time but cant, what are we doing wrong?

We've tried about 3 times but i cant get my penis in further than half an inch. The first time we thought it was because we rushed it but we had another attempt another day going slower and both of us being more relaxed but both times we tried like this we got nowhere further. I don't know what to do me and my girlfriend are both getting rather worried.
